Host and one guest in a fireside chat on a conference set

What we doModerator

Fireside chats.
One guest. Two chairs. No slides.

A fireside chat is a format, not a job title. One guest, a host, and a conversation the audience is allowed to overhear. We design that session for Brussels policy days and European conferences.

A host in conversation with a guest on a European stage

Two chairs and one thread.

A fireside chat puts one guest in the chair and keeps them there. No slide deck, no line of panellists, no video package carrying the argument. The value is that person’s judgement, said out loud, for about twenty-five to forty minutes, with time left for the room.

The format is simple on purpose: two seats angled toward each other, a short open, one thread, and questions from the audience before the clock dies. We agree the thread, the boundaries and what the room must leave with. Warmth is part of the setting. A soft interview is not.

Moderators on a European conference stage

If it needs a running order, it is a talk show.

Choose a fireside when one voice is the point: after a keynote, with a commissioner or CEO, or when a five-person panel would only dilute the guest. It is easier to brief than a panel and easier to follow on a livestream, because there is only one story.

The person who asks the questions is a stage interviewer. That is a role. This page is the format around them. When the session needs several guests, clips and a faster clock, that is a talk show, not a longer fireside.

Outcomes

How the format is built

  • One guest, one thread, no slides
  • A clock that leaves a third of the slot for the room
  • Boundaries agreed before anyone sits down
  • A close that states the one idea worth taking home

Practical

Best fit

  • The conversation after a keynote
  • One commissioner, CEO or specialist
  • A hybrid stream that has to follow a single story
  • Any slot that should not become a panel

Who it's for

Who books this

  • EU institutions and agencies with one high-level guest
  • European associations and companies
  • Agencies replacing a panel with a real conversation
