Moderation & event design training in Brussels
Train your team to hold the room.

Moderation training for people asked to chair a panel, host an event, or raise the level of the events their organisation already runs.

“I wanted to be able to keep control of the panel I had to moderate. I learned to rock it.”

Event leadEuropean association

You are asked to moderate a panel, or to host or emcee an event. Or you want the events your organisation already holds to reach a higher level. This training helps you chair the panel, host the policy day and design the programme.

You learn the hour itself, and the design around it: timing, difficult speakers, agendas that reach a goal, interaction that keeps the room awake, and the setup that makes the event possible. Run it in-house with your events or communications team and you also set shared rules for every event you do.

to hold the room.

Why this training

Why this works

  • Moderation

Structure the timing, handle difficult speakers and audiences, and keep control of the conversation while leaving room for something spontaneous. The event still ends on time.

  • Be the captain of the ship

A good moderator does more than ask the right questions. You are part of the design and setup of the panel or the event. The training helps you take control and find the role that suits you.

  • Event design

Good moderation starts with the design. You build agendas that work and choose methods that reach the goals of the event. Very few people shine by giving a presentation. You practise other methods that help people shine, get the message across and keep the audience engaged.

  • Interaction design

If the audience drifts, the goals of the event drift with it. You learn to use interaction so the room stays awake, amused and surprised.

  • All the things around it

Technicalities, room setup, strategic breaks and interaction tools, and how each one serves the event. Useful for event managers as well as chairs: you move from running a session to co-creating a better event.

  • Set the bar high

Run this in-house with your events or communications team and each person learns to design and moderate. Together you set shared expectations, rules and methods, so your events fit the organisation, the image you want and the goals you need, and stand out in Brussels.

Anna Gumbau

I host rooms where the chair has a list of names, the speakers have their own speeches, and nobody has agreed what people should leave with. On the day, the moderator becomes a traffic warden.

What I train is the work before the stage: design the hour, brief the speakers, practise the follow-up that does not let a guest escape the question, and decide when a panel is the wrong format. Hybrid and interpretation are part of it when that is how you actually meet.

The shift I watch for is when someone stops asking how to fill the time and starts asking what must be true when people stand up.

  • Intervene when the hour goes off course

Attitude

  • The job starts before you walk on
  • The event is for the audience; speakers are there for them

Who trains this?

Anna Gumbau and Rogier Elshout train it. Either can take the day, and a larger group can have both. High-stakes days can still use an external moderator from our network.

This page targets moderation and event design for conferences and panels. Facilitation for workshops and citizen assemblies lives under our Facilitation services — we can add an in-house facilitation module when needed.

How long does the training take?

Half-day to multi-day. Half-day covers essentials; one or two days add practice panels and programme design.

Who should attend?

Anyone asked to chair a meeting, event or panel, plus EU association and NGO event teams and public-affairs or communications units who want more impact from their events.

What does it cost?

Indicative from €1,500 half-day / €2,500 full day (one trainer, ex VAT).

Can you train multilingual or hybrid event skills?

Yes. We cover interpretation-aware pacing, hybrid sidekick roles and interaction tools when that matches your programmes.
